About KMD
OUR MISSION is to create thoughtful, beautiful interiors that meet our clients’ aesthetic, functional, and economic goals while honoring and celebrating the buildings that contain them.
OUR PERSPECTIVE is informed by a respect for historical architecture coupled with an appreciation of the playfulness and brightness of modern design.
OUR EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE applies to all types of projects: on residential renovations we can produce the drawings necessary for construction. On larger commercial and new-construction projects we focus on the interiors and work in tandem with a full architecture team.
OUR APPROACH is dynamic and thorough. We understand that our clients’ needs and preferences are unique. This drives us to design each project from scratch, which keeps us in a constant state of creative discovery. We work holistically and consider every detail. This involves establishing an overall aesthetic direction, thinking through the circulation and layout of each space, designing interior architectural elements, specifying finishes, fixtures, furniture, accessories, and art. To ensure the design intent is seen through to the very end, we know our involvement in every phase is key. From conceptual design through construction administration to the very last furniture installation, we want to be there.
WE ARE BASED IN SEATTLE, WASHINGTON. We work across the United States and enjoy the diversity and learning opportunities offered by working in communities other than our own.
Raised in Seattle, Kaitlin Maddox developed an early sensitivity to the geography, light, and layered culture of the Pacific Northwest — an influence that continues to inform her aesthetic point of view. With a background in organizational psychology, she approaches design through a human-centered lens, attuned to the subtle ways people inhabit their environments. Her work is grounded in the belief that interiors are not merely visual compositions, but lived spaces that shape emotion, rhythm, and experience.
Travel and exposure to a wide range of cultures have deepened her perspective, reinforcing an empathetic approach to design that prioritizes authenticity and personal narrative. Each project becomes an exploration of how environment can support and elevate the lives unfolding within it. Outside the studio, Kaitlin’s world is animated by her children, Isabel, Henning, and Oliver, and by her partnership with her husband, engineer Nick Maddox — her collaborator in life’s ongoing projects. She is instinctively drawn to caretaking, tending plants, animals, and family with the same quiet attentiveness that defines her work, reflecting her belief that beauty is inseparable from care.
